I remember an ahh hah moment, in my mid-20’s when I sat in front of a corporate executive. Thankfully, he was also a friend. When, he offered me a fireball candy. Tossing it in my mouth until the heat was too much. Quickly, I plucked it out of my mouth to blow on it as I had always done. This time however I was met with a crazy glare and a “What are you doing?” which took me by surprise. He snapped me back into reality as I explained, justifying my sanity or lack there of at the time. You see, when I was 4 we used to go to the candy store and this was mom’s advice. Made sense at the time, so I just kept doing it. That was until someone pointed out differently.

Where have you turned up your heat, just going through the motions, reacting or worse creating an unnecessary crisis as you go about the day?

  • Dieting.. Lulling you into a false sense of health as you wage war on your body.
  • Resolutions.. Short bursts of progress until every-day life gets in the way.
  • Time Management.. Focus on doing more today instead of supporting growth & future ideals.
  • Health.. Fading resource you painfully earn the right to keep instead of a birthright that supports you.
  • Responsibility.. Enabling others to slack off or drop the ball and a distraction of living the live you’re meant for.

I was no longer connected to the process of what I was doing and blindly went on as I had always done until someone pointed out how what I was doing made absolutely no sense.

Take A Break From Technology

“Just turn off your phone!”

“Why can’t you just switch it off?”

“Can’t we just talk to each other?”

You’ve probably received many warnings to turn off your phone and other devices. You may have even rolled your eyes when you heard them. I mean, can you imagine living without technology? It opens up possibilities for communication previously past generations would have deemed impossible.

Is it really that dangerous to stay connected to our devices?

The answer is a resounding YES.

The Effects Of Always Being On

Electronics make our lives better in many ways, including keeping us in touch with friends and family around the world. But being connected to others constantly can wear on our well-being. It can cut into our long-term happiness and lower our overall satisfaction with life.

The benefits of taking a digital detox (or even small steps toward one) are far-reaching. People who have taken a break from technology report a sense of feeling more closely connected to those around them. When we’re tied to our technological devices, our priorities shift from spending time with our loved ones in person and can easily disrupt our well-being. Stress can easily increase. We may feel more depressed and more alone in general when we spend an excessive amount of time using electronics to communicate with others, rather than communicating face to face.

How To Do A Digital Detox (Without Going Crazy)

A digital detox doesn’t have to mean you cut out technology altogether. You can take gentle steps toward using your devices less and listening to your body and mind more.

Here are a few guidelines to create your own digital detox. Use as many or as few as you desire:

  1. Purge yourself of unnecessary electronic equipment. This approach can apply to entire devices all the way down to the apps on your phone. Take time to be critical about which electronics you use with regularity. Even eliminating half the apps on your phone narrows down your electronic clutter. It can lighten your mental load, even if you don’t stop using your phone altogether.
  2. Schedule your social media posts. Taking just a little extra time to schedule social media posts ahead of time frees you up to post on social media at your leisure. There’s no need to update the world (or your pages) every day if you already have content scheduled.
  3. Write in a journal. Give yourself a break from structuring every sentence to be perfect for Facebook. Some free writing in a journal can ease your mind and ease your desire to record yourself.
  4. Reach out to friends in person or through a phone call. One easy break you can take from technology is to reach out to your friends personally whenever you need support. Most of us will just text when we want to communicate, but taking some time to call or meet in person can create welcome break from electronic communication.
  5. Give yourself “breaks” for 1-2 days. You don’t have to give up your electronics for a very long time if you’re not ready to do so. Just take the weekend off, or stop at a certain time after work. Over time, you may even find these breaks to be addictive!

6 Exercise Tips for Busy People

It takes time and effort to take care of your body. No argument here! But it’s incredibly important to find time to exercise. The benefits of exercise are too important to ignore.

Yet most of us are too busy to even make time for what we WANT to do, let alone find time to create new, healthy habits. It’s not exactly relaxing to start a new exercise routine when you’re already exhausted from work.

Thankfully, there are lots of ways to fit exercise in without having to go to the gym every single day. Doing the same thing day in and day out can get boring, and habits we find boring aren’t habits we’re likely to keep up forever.

Here are six great ways to sneak exercise into your daily routine. Each tip is tested for sustainability, and will make exercise a lot more fun than those one-size-fits-all routines you’ve probably tried in the past.

  1. Rethink your seating. At your workplace, do you sit in a normal office chair? If so, consider shifting to a standing desk, which exercises your leg muscles much more actively than you would while sitting passively. Even sitting on an exercise ball forces your core muscles to activate, helping your body exercise to keep itself stable. It may not seem like much, but those efforts stack up to greater muscular strength over time.

 

  1. Rethink your commute. If you’re in a position where you can walk or bike to work, that can be a start to your day that’s both active and You’ll walk into the office centered from the movement and time spent listening to your own thoughts. Even doing exercises based around sitting can add up. Some shoulder flexion action during the morning traffic jam can go a long way toward preventing stiffness and tightness in the body.

 

  1. Do what you’re a fan of. Love watching Dancing With The Stars? Take up ballroom dancing or even Zumba. Building your dream team during spring training? Try a few drills that the players are doing next time you’re at the field. By building upon what you already love, you’re setting the stage to have a lot more fun than doing exercise you “have” to do.

 

  1. Recruit your friends. Ever hear the saying, “The more, the merrier?” It applies to fitness, too! Grab a friend or two for a hike, jog, bike ride, or leisurely stroll. You’ll find that the time flies – and you might even find yourself looking forward to your next excursion!

 

  1. Don’t punish yourself for low activity. The body adapts to activity levels, but it also loves resting. Even if you just stretch your body during commercial breaks, keeping your body from growing sedentary is a very good thing. So keep it going to see benefits! You’ll never regret exercising, even if it feels like “not enough.”

 

  1. Join a competition. Do you consider yourself to be a competitive person? Then joining a competition could be the perfect option for you! Even if you don’t have the skills to compete in a league for your activity of choice, you can still challenge your friends or yourself to up your game.
